The Fibrous Skeleton of the Heart

Like the human body, the heart has its skeleton. The 4 chambers of the heart are attached to it.

There are 4 rigid fibrous rings and a tiny vertical section a few millimeters long in the lower center. This marks the beginning of the septum separating the 2 ventricles.

In addition to attaching the heart chambers, these rings are the seat of the 4 heart valves. Because they are fibrous and rigid, they cannot be enlarged.

Replacement of Cardiac Valve

When a valve needs to be replaced, the new one will be chosen based on the diameter of the fibrous ring within which it will be installed.
