About Isabelle Ruel

Researcher – Cardiovascular Genetics

McGill University Health Centre (MUHC)

Dr Isabelle Ruel is a researcher at the McGill University Health Centre, where she contributes to the work of the cardiovascular genetics laboratory. Her research focuses on improving the understanding of lipid and lipoprotein disorders.

Training

Dr Ruel completed a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at Université Laval.

She then pursued graduate studies in the Department of Human Nutrition at the same institution, where she obtained both a Master’s degree and a PhD.

Her research focused on the genetic and metabolic characterization of deficiencies in lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase, two key enzymes involved in lipid metabolism in humans.

Professional Career

Since completing her studies, Dr Ruel has been working at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal.

Her work spans both fundamental and clinical research, aiming to better understand the mechanisms underlying lipid and lipoprotein disorders.

Areas of Expertise

Her areas of expertise include:

  • genetic lipid disorders
  • lipoprotein metabolism
  • enzyme deficiencies affecting lipid transport
  • cardiovascular genetics

Clinical and Research Interests

Dr Ruel’s research aims to better define the genetic and metabolic basis of lipid disorders, with the goal of improving their detection, understanding, and management.

She is involved in projects that bridge basic science and clinical research, helping translate scientific discoveries into clinical practice.

Engagement and Collaboration

Dr Ruel serves as the national coordinator of the FH Canada Registry, an initiative aimed at improving the detection, management, and understanding of familial hypercholesterolemia across Canada.
