Dr. De Varennes graduated from McGill University in Montreal in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in 1991. In 1992, he obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree with a thesis titled “Metabolic Studies of the Canine Heart Preserved Ex-Vivo.”
Since then, he has been practicing at the Department of Surgery at the McGill University Health Centre in the division of cardiac surgery.
He is the director of the fellowship program in complex and advanced cardiac surgery as well as in valve surgery.
A recipient of several awards and honorable mentions, he is heavily involved in teaching and research. He has authored over 75 publications in various prestigious medical journals and has been invited to review certain chapters of medical books.
