Medical and Specialized Training

Dr. James L. Velianou obtained his medical degree from McMaster University, following pre-medical studies at the University of Toronto.

He completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at Queen’s University and McMaster University, followed by specialization in Cardiology at McMaster University.

He then pursued advanced fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, an internationally recognized center of excellence.

Clinical Practice and Areas of Expertise

Dr. Velianou practices as an interventional cardiologist at Hamilton Health Sciences and Niagara Health in Ontario.

His clinical work includes:

  • coronary interventional cardiology
  • structural heart disease interventions

 

He has particular expertise in complex procedures and minimally invasive techniques used to treat a wide range of cardiovascular conditions.

Leadership and Clinical Involvement

Throughout his career, Dr. Velianou has held several important leadership roles, including:

  • Medical Director of the Coronary Care Unit
  • Co-Director of the Heart Investigation Unit at Hamilton General Hospital

 

He has also contributed to multiple provincial and national committees in interventional cardiology, helping to advance clinical practice and standards of care.

Development of Structural Heart Interventions (TAVI)

Dr. Velianou is an early adopter of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), performing these procedures since 2008.

He has played a key role in the development and expansion of structural heart programs, helping to make these treatments more widely available.

He has also been actively involved in the training, mentoring, and proctoring of interventional cardiologists and specialized centers.

Teaching, Research, and Collaboration

Dr. Velianou is an Associate Professor of Medicine at McMaster University and is actively involved in teaching medical students and residents.

His clinical practice is complemented by ongoing involvement in clinical research and close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, particularly within Heart Team–based care approaches.
