Initially, there is only one primitive atrium, which later divides into two distinct chambers: the right atrium and the left atrium.<\/p><p>This separation occurs through the formation of a wall called the interatrial septum.<\/p><p>The development of this septum takes place in several stages. circulation follows a well-organized path through the blood vessels, the heart, and the lungs.<br \/>Blood moves in one direction only, without flowing backward.<\/p><p>The presence of an atrial septal defect alters this normal pathway.<\/p><p>The opening between the two atria creates an additional passage within the heart itself: blood can then move from one atrium to the other.<\/p><p>Because pressure is normally higher in the left atrium than in the right atrium, a portion of oxygenated blood returning from the lungs is diverted to the right side through the ASD.<\/p><p>This oxygen-rich blood is added to the venous blood already present in the right
