1950s, no one had ever seen the arteries of the heart in a living person.<br \/>The only way to discover a coronary blockage was\u2026 during an autopsy.<br \/>In practice, this helped no one: it was impossible to prevent a heart attack or guide treatment.<\/p><p>Cardiologists knew that coronary artery disease existed \u2014 its symptoms had been described for centuries \u2014 but they were essentially working <strong>in the dark<\/strong>.<\/p><p>No technology allowed them to observe the arteries that supply blood to the heart.<br \/>They could suspect a problem, but never actually see it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d010ab e-flex persisted.<br \/>The most widespread belief was that placing a catheter directly into a heart artery \u2014 or worse, injecting contrast dye into it \u2014 would lead to <strong>disastrous consequences<\/strong>.<\/p><p>It was thought this would trigger an immediate and fatal arrhythmia: ventricular fibrillation.<\/p><p>This fear came largely from experiments in animals, where direct injection into a coronary artery did cause severe arrhythmias.<br \/>From this, physicians concluded \u2014 without ever confirming it in humans \u2014 that no person would survive such an injection.<\/p><p>As a result:<\/p><p>\u27a1\ufe0f doctors strictly avoided the coronary arteries,<br \/>\u27a1\ufe0f they were considered completely <strong>off-limits<\/strong>,<br \/>\u27a1\ufe0f and no one dared insert a catheter into them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7744ce1 e-con-full the coronary arteries\u2026 without ever touching them.<br \/>He placed a small catheter with a balloon at its tip at the very beginning of the aorta.<br \/>By inflating the balloon, he could inject contrast dye <strong>only into the aortic root<\/strong>, the point where the coronary arteries originate.<\/p><p>And then, a small miracle:<\/p><p>\u27a1\ufe0f no one died,<br \/>\u27a1\ufe0f and the openings of the coronary arteries became visible.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd08616 the coronaries<\/strong> from the aorta caused <strong>no harmful consequences<\/strong>.<br \/>This was a turning point \u2014 the first crack in the myth that any opacification of the coronary arteries would be fatal.<\/p><p>Without knowing it, Dr. Dotter had just opened the door to true coronary angiography\u2026 a breakthrough that would occur a few months later, entirely by accident.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4673da3 e-flex
