World War II interrupted their research when Gibbon was called to serve as a surgeon in New Caledonia.<\/p><p>Upon his return, he resumed his project with the technical support of IBM engineers. He corrected an <strong>atrial septal defect (ASD)<\/strong> in an 18-year-old patient, Martha Cowley.<\/p><p>The operation, lasting 26 minutes, went smoothly.
