World War II interrupted their research when Gibbon was called to serve as a surgeon in New Caledonia.<\/p><p>Upon his return, he resumed his project with the technical support of IBM engineers. He corrected an <strong>atrial septal defect (ASD)<\/strong> in an 18-year-old patient, Martha Cowley.<\/p><p>The operation, lasting 26 minutes, went smoothly. The next two surgeries ended in the death of the patients. Shaken, IBM announced two years later that it was abandoning the project, citing a shift in priorities.
