This leads to a sudden loss of consciousness, respiratory arrest, and, in the absence of immediate resuscitation, death.<\/p><p>Most of the time, there are no warning signs. These deaths may account for half of all cardiac-related deaths, making it the leading cause of mortality\u2014ahead of heart attacks, cancer, and strokes.<\/p><p>In the United States, the numbers are even more striking: more than 350,000 deaths per year, most occurring outside the hospital. Men are affected twice as often as women.
