Dwight Harken and Charles Bailey, successfully performing procedures on the mitral valve using techniques they had developed.<\/p><p>While working at Roper Hospital in Charleston, Dr. Smithy developed a <strong>particular interest in aortic stenosis<\/strong>\u2014a disease affecting the valve at the heart\u2019s exit. He hoped to partner with the renowned <strong>Dr. Alfred Blalock<\/strong>, a leading figure in cardiac surgery, with the aim of developing a surgical technique for aortic stenosis\u2014and ultimately becoming the next patient himself.<\/p><p>The proposed approach was inspired by existing techniques for mitral stenosis. During the surgical attempt, the high pressure in the left ventricle caused by the stenosis led to a catastrophic rupture of the heart muscle as soon as the finger was inserted.<\/p><p>The ventricle quite literally burst, bringing the experiment to a sudden and tragic end.
