Bailey performed a bold procedure on a man suffering from <strong>severe mitral valve stenosis<\/strong>. The patient, 37-year-old Walter Stockton, was considered to be near death.<\/p><p>The procedure, described in a medical journal, unfolded as follows:<\/p><ul><li>The chest was opened between the third and fourth ribs on the left side<\/li><li>The heart was exposed<\/li><li>A purse-string suture was placed on the left atrium, just above the mitral valve<\/li><li>An incision was made in the center of the suture<\/li><li>Dr. Bailey quickly inserted his index finger into the opening to control the bleeding, then advanced his finger toward the valve<\/li><li>He attempted to separate the two mitral leaflets, which had fused over time<\/li><li>The finger was withdrawn, and the suture was tightened to close the opening<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>This operation, performed without cardiopulmonary bypass, was one of the first attempts at direct intracardiac surgery on a living patient. The patient bled out in less than a minute and <strong>died on the operating table<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Three more patients will follow,<strong> all victims<\/strong> of serious complications. She had a history of rheumatic fever in childhood\u2014a condition known to damage heart valves, particularly the mitral valve.<\/p><p>This time, the operation went smoothly, and the patient made a full recovery.<\/p><p>A few days later, Dr. Bailey proudly presented her\u2014alive and well\u2014before a packed auditorium at the annual congress of the American College of Chest Physicians in Chicago, a prestigious gathering of specialists in his field.<\/p><p>This success marked a decisive turning point in his career.
